Keating strutted back
to the front of the room,
put the trash can on the floor
and jumped into it.
키팅은 방 앞으로 다시 돌아와 쓰레기통을 바닥에 놓고 그 안으로 뛰어들었다.

The boys laughed louder.

Fire danced in Keating eyes.
키팅의 눈에서 불꽅 같은 것이 너울거렸다.

He stomped the trash a few times,
then stepped out
and kicked the can away.
그는 몇 차례 휴지통 속에서 종이들을 밟아준 후, 밖으로 나와서는 휴지통을 발로 뻥 차서 멀리 날려 버렸다.

"This is battle, boys," he cried.

“War! You are souls
at a critical juncture.
Either you will succumb
to the will of academic hoi polloi,
and the fruit wil die on the vine-or
you will triumph as individuals.
그래, 전쟁 말야! 지금 여러분의 혼은 위기에 빠져 있다 이따위 고리따분한 ‘호이 폴로이’의 말을 그대로 믿고서 열매 한 번 못 맺고 그대로 사멸애 버릴 것인가, 아니면 각자 주체성을 가지고 승리를 거둘 것인가?

"Have no fear,
you will learn what
this school wants you to learn
in my class;
하지만 두려워 마라. 여러분은 곧 알게 될 것이다. 이 학교가 너희들에게 무엇을 가르치라고 명령했는지를. 원한다면 모두 가르쳐줄게.

however, if I do my job properly,
you will also learn
a great deal more.
그렇지만 나는 교육이란 걸 진지하게 생각하는 사람이다. 그래서 난 여러분에게 그 이상의 것을 가르쳐주고 싶다.

to savor language and words
because no matter what
anyone tells you,
words and ideas
have the power
to change th world.

예를 들어, 당신은 언어와 단어를 음미하는 법을 배우게 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 누가 당신에게 무엇을 말하든, 단어와 아이디어는 세상을 바꿀 수 있는 힘을 가지고 있기 때문이다.

A moment ago
I used the term 'hoi pollo '
Who knows what it means?
Come on, Overstreet,  you twerp.
조금 전에 나는 'hoi pollo'라는 용어를 사용했다. 누가 그 뜻이 무엇인지 아는 사람 있나? 어떠냐, 오버스트리트, 이 천치야.

The class laughed.
"Anderson, are you a man or a boil?"
The class laughed again, and everyone looked at Todd.
앤더슨, 당신은 남자인가 아니면 기생충인가?" 학급은 다시 웃었고, 모두가 토드를 바라보았다.

He tensed visibly, and, unable to speak, jerkily shook his head. "No.'
그는 눈에 띄게 긴장했고, 얼굴을 붉히며 맥없이 고개를 흔들었다. "아뇨.“

Meeks raised his hand.

"The hoi polloi. Doesn't it mean 'the herd?"
호이 폴로이란 우매한 군중이란 뜻 아닌가요?

"Precisely, Meeks," Keating said.
정확했다.

"Greek for ‘the herd. However, be warned that when you say ‘the hoi polloi,' you are actually saying, 'the the herd, indicating that you, too, are hoi polloi!"
그리스어로 '무리'를 뜻한다. 그러나, 당신이 '호이 폴로이'라고 말할 때, 네가 실제로 '무리'라고 말하는 건 곧 너희들 역시 호이 폴로이 라는 뜻이다. 너희들도 그중에 하나가 되는 거지.

Keating grinned wryly, and Meeks smiled.
키팅은 장난치듯 웃었다.

The teacher paced to the back of the room.
키팅은 교실 뒷쪽으로 자리를 옮겼다.

"Now Mr. Pitts may argue that nineteenth-century literature has nothing to do with business school or medical school.
이제 피츠 씨는 19세기 문학 같은 건 경영대학이나 의대와 아무 상관이 없다고 생각하겠지?

He thinks we should study our J. Evans Pritchard, learn our rhyme and meter, and quietly go about our business of achieving other ambitions.

그는 우리가 우리의 J. Evans Pritchard의 말대로 공부하면서, 운율과 미터를 외우겠지만 나중에 또 다른 야심을 채울 때가 되면 그때 가서 그 모든 일에서 손을 떼도 늦지 않는다고 생각할 거야.

Pitts smiled and shook his head. "Who, me?" he asked.

Keating slammed his hand on the wall behind him, and the sound reverberated like a drum.
키팅이 등 뒤의 벽을 손바닥으로 힘껏 쳤다. 그 소리는 북소리처럼 교실 안 가득 울려 퍼졌다.

The entire class jumped and turned to the rear. "Well," Keating whispered defiantly.
모두 깜짝 놀라 뒤를 돌아보았다.
키팅은 도전적으로 속삭였다.

"I say-drivel! One reads poetry because he is a member of the human race, and the human race is filled with passion!
좋아, 이제 결론을 내리지! 우리가 시를 읽는 것은 바로 인류의 일원이기 때문이야. 그리고 그 인류는 온통 열망에 휩싸여 있다.

Medicine, law, banking-these are necessary to sustain life. But poetry, romance, love, beauty?
의학, 법학, 금융, 이런 건 모두 삶을 영위하기 위해 필요한 것들이다. 그렇다면 시, 낭만, 사랑, 아름다움은 왜 이 세상에 존재하는 걸까?

These are what we stay alive for!
그건 바로 우리가 살아가는 목적이기 때문이다.

"I quote from Whitman:
그럼 휘트먼의 시를 한 수 읊어보겠다.

"O me! O life! of the questions of
these recurring,
오 나여! 오 생명이여! 한없이 떠오르는
이 의문들.

Of the endless trains of the faithless,

부정한 것들이 꼬리를 물고 달려오고
도시는 온통 바보들로 넘칠 뿐….

이 어디에 아름다움이 있단 말인가?

That you are here-That life exists and iden-tity,
대답은 하나
내가 여기에 존재한다는 것, 살아있다는 것.

That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.
그리고 장엄한 연극이 계속되니 그 속에서
내가 한 편의 시를 읆을 수 있다는 것!

Keating paused.

The class sat silent, taking in the message of the poem.
학생들은 조용했다. 시가 전하는 내용에 흠뻑 빠져들었다.

Keating looked around again and repeated awestruck, "That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.
선생님은 아이들을 둘러보고 경외감에 가득 찬  목소리로 다시 마지막 구절을 읊었다.
장엄한 연극이 계속되니 그 속에서
내가 한 편의 시를 읊을 수 있다는 것.

He stood silent at the back of the room, then slowly walked to the front.
그는 교실 뒤에서 조용히 서 있다가 천천히 교단을 향해 걸어갔다.

All eyes were riveted on his impassioned face. Keating looked around the room. "What will your verse be?" he asked intently.
학생들의 눈은 그의 진지한 표정에 푹 빠져들었다. 키팅은 교실을 찬찬히 훒어보고서 한 가지 질문을 던졌다
여러분에게 한편의 시는 무엇인가?

The teacher waited a long moment, then softly broke the mood.
키팅은 오랫동안 기다리며 질문의 여운을 퍼뜨렸다.
그러고 나서 다시 활기찬 목소리로 수업을 이끌어나갔다.

and learn about Wordsworth's notion of romanticism."
자, 그럼 교과서 60쪽을 열고 워즈워스의 로맨티시즘 사상에 관해 공부해 봅시다.
