"Don't come, then, " Charlie shot back.

"You know how many demerits were talking about here?" Cameron asked Charlie.

얼마나 먼지 알아? 

"So don't come!" Charlie said. "Please!"

Cameron relented. "All I'm saying is, we have to be careful. We can't get caught."

카메론이 다소 누그러진 어투로 말했다. 

"아니, 내 말은 신중해야 한다는 거야. 들켜서 좋을 거 없잖아."

"Well, no kidding, Sherlock, " Charlie retorted sarcastically.

음, 농담 아니야, 셜록," 찰리가 비꼬며 반박했다.

"Who's in?" Neil asked, silencing the argument.

갈 사람? 닐이 조용히 시키며 물었다. 

"I'm in, " Charlie said first.
"Me too," Cameron added.
Neil looked at Knox, Pitts, and Meeks. Pitts hesitated. "Well..."
"Oh, come on, Pitts, " Charlie said.
"His grades are hurting, Charlie, " Meeks said in Pitts's defense.

그의 성적이 떨어지고 있어, 찰리," Meeks는 피트를 변호하며 말했다. 

"Then you can help him, Meeks, " Neil suggested.

"What is this, a midnight study group?" Pitts asked, still unsure.

도대체 뭐하자는 거야? 한밤중에 모여 공부하자고? 피츠는 여전히 불안한 표정으로 말했다.

"Forget it, Pitts, " Neil said. "You're coming.
Meeks, are your grades hurting, too?" Everyone laughed.
"All right," Meeks said. "I'll try anything once.'

좋아, 어쨌든 난 뭐든 해보겠어.

"Except sex," Charlie laughed. "Right, Meeks, horsed around him.
"Knox?" Charlie continued.
"I'm in as long as we're careful, " Cameron said.

조심해서 한다면 나도 끼겠어.

"I don't know," he said. "I don't get it."

난 모르겠어. 난 별로 내키지 않아.

"Come on," Charlie encouraged. "It will help you get Chris."

낙스 잘 생각해봐. 크리스를 차지하는데도 도움이 될 거야.

찰리가 낙스에게 격려하듯 말했다.

"It will?" Knox looked mystified. "How do you figure that?"

그래? 낙스는 믿을 수 없다는 듯이 쳐다보았다. 왜? 어떤 점에서?

"Didn't you hear Keating say women swooned!"

키팅선생님 말씀 못 들었어?  여자들이 시를 듣고 황홀해했다잖아.
"But why?" Knox asked, still uncertain.

아직도 결정을 못 내리고 낙스가 말했다.

The group started to break up, and Knox followed Charlie toward the dorm.

때마침 종소리가 울려 학생들은 흩어졌고 낙스는 기숙사로 가는 찰리를 따라가며 물었다.

"Why do they swoon, Charlie? Tell me, why do they swoon?" Knox's question remained unanswered when off in the distance a bell rang, summoning the boys to dinner.

여자들이 왜 황홀해하는 거야? 낙스의 질문을 뒤로하고 저녁식사시간에 늦지 않기 위해 서둘러 식당으로 걸어갔다.

After dinner, Neil and Todd went to study hall and sat down at a table together.

저녁 식사 후 닐과 토드는 자습실로 가서 책상을 마주하고 앉았다. 

"Listen, " Neil said to his roommate in a hushed voice. "I'm inviting you to the society meeting.

닐이 다시 토드를 설득하려든 참이었다. 난 지금 너를 죽은 시인의 사회 모임에 초대하는 거야.

Neil had noticed that no one had asked Todd if he was in. "You can't expect everybody to think of you all the time. 

닐은 그때까지 누구도 토드에게 그날 밤 있을 모임에 함께 갈 것을 권유하지 않았다는 걸 알았다. 

항상 모든 사람들이 자신을 생각해 줄 거라고 생각하면 안 돼.

Nobody knows you. And you never talk to anyone!"

다른 아이들은 너에 대해 몰라. 그리고 넌 누구와도 이야기하지 않잖아.

"Thanks, Todd said, "but it's not a question of that."

고마워, 하지만 이건 그런 문제가 아냐.

"What is it then?" Neil asked.

그럼 뭐가 문젠데?

"I—I just don't want to come, " he stammered.

난, 난 그냥 가고 싶지 않을 뿐이야. 토드는 말을 더듬었다.

"But why?" Neil asked. 

"Don't you understand what Keating is saying? Don't you want to do something about it?"

넌 키팅 선생님 말씀을 이해하지 못하겠니? 너도 뭔가 색다른 일을 해보고 싶지 않아?"

 Neil quickly turned a page in his book as a study proctor walked by, eyeing the boys suspiciously.

닐은 공부 감독관이 소년들을 의심스럽게 쳐다보며 지나가자 그의 책의 한 페이지를 빠르게 넘겼다.

"Yes, " Todd whispered, after the proctor was out of earshot. "But..."

감독관이 다른 곳으로 사라지기 무섭게 토드는 그에게 작은 소리로 속삭였다.

"But what, Todd? Tell me, " Neil begged.

토드 근데 뭐? 어서 말해봐. 토드다 반응을 보이자 닐은 신이 나 말했다.

Todd looked down. "I don't want to read."

토드는 눈을 내리깔았다. 난 큰소리로 책을 읽는 게 싫어.

"What?" Neil looked at him incredulously.

닐이 믿을 수 없다는 표정으로 그를 바라보았다. 

"Keating said everybody took turns reading,

키팅선생님은 모든 사람들이 돌아가며 시를 읽는다고 했잖아.

Todd said. "I don't want to do it."

"God, you really have a problem, don't you?"

너 정말 문제가 있긴 있었구나. 그렇지?

Neil shook his head. "How can it hurt you to read?

책을 큰소리로 읽는 게 해로운 건 아니잖아?

I mean, isn't that what this is all about? Expressing yourself?"

내 말은 바로 그게 그 모임의 목적인데 그게 자신 없단 말이야? 자신을 표현하는 게 싫어?

"Neil, I can't explain it." Todd blushed. "I just don't want to do it."

토드가 부끄럽다는 듯 얼굴을 붉히며 말했다. 난 그냥 하기 싫은 거야.

Neil shuffled his papers angrily as he looked at Todd. 

닐은 토드를 바라보며 어찌할 바를 몰라하며 공책을 이리저리 넘겼다.

Then he thought of something. "What if you didn't have to read?" Neil suggested. "What if you just came and listened?"

그러다가 한 가지 묘안이 떠올랐다. 

널 낭독에서 제외시켜 주면 어때? 그냥 참석만 하고 애들이 낭송하는 걸 듣는 거야.

"That's not the way it works, " Todd pointed out.

그건 원래의 목적과 다르잖아. 토드가 지적했다.

"If I join, the guys will want me to read."

게다가 다른 애들은 내가 참석하면 나도 낭송을 하길 바랄 거야.

"I know, but what if they said you didn't have to?"

알아, 하지만 만약 그들이 네가 그럴 필요가 없다고 말한다면?"

"You mean ask them?" Todd's face reddened

네가 일일이 부탁하겠다고? 토드의 얼굴은 빨개졌다. 

"Neil, it's embarrassing."

닐, 그럼 창피하잖아. 

"No, it's not, " Neil said, jumping up from his seat. "Just wait here."

잠깐만 여기 있어 봐. 닐은 그렇게 말하고 벌떡 자리에서 일어났다.

"Neil, " Todd called, as the proctor turned and gave him a disapproving look.

닐 토드가 큰소리로 이름을 부르자 학생지도주임이 고개를 돌렸다. 그리고 경고의 뜻으로 닐을 쏘아보았다.

Neil was off before Todd could stop him. 

만류할 사이도 없이 닐은 사라져 버렸다.

He slumped miserably in his seat, then opened his history book and began to take notes.

토드는 참혹한 기분으로 그대로 앉아 역사책을 펼친 후 공책에다 무언가를 끄적이기 시작했다.
