Neil talked in low tones to Charlie and Knox
in the dorm hall
as the evening parade of prebedtime activity went on around them.
닐은 찰리, 낙스와 함께 목소리를 낮춰 가며 얘기를 했다.
기숙사에서는 학생들이 잠자리에 들기 전 치르는 의례적인 풍경이 벌어지고 있었다.

Boys moved about the hallway in pajamas, carrying pillows under one arm and books under the other.
모든 일과를 끝내고 벌써 잠옷으로 갈아입은 학생들은 옆구리에 베개를 끼고 또 다른 쪽에는 책들을 든 채 자기 방을 찾아 분주하게 복도를 오갔다.

Neil threw his towel over his shoulder, patted Knox on the back, and headed toward his room.
닐은 방금 세수를 끝냈는지 어깨에 수건을 걸친 채 낙스의 등을 한대 탁 치고 나서 자기 방으로 갔다.

He tossed the towel aside and noticed something on his desk that wasn't there before.
그는 수건을 한쪽에 던져 놓다가 책상 위에서 여태껏 한번도 보지 못한 물건을 발견했다.

He hesitated momentarily, then picked up an old, well-worn poetry anthology.
그는 잠시 머뭇거리다가 그 물건을 집어들었다. 그건 낡고 손때가 묻은 시집 한 권이었다.

He opened it and, inside the cover, written in longhand, was the name "J. Keating." Neil read aloud the inscription under the signature.
표지를 열자 지극히 평범한 글씨체가 눈에 들어왔다. 글씨의 주인공은 다름 아닌 J키팅 선생님이었다. 닐은 이름밑에 쓰인 내용을 큰 소리로 읽었다.

"Dead Poets." He stretched out on his bed and began skimming the thin yellowed pages of the old text.
죽은 시인의. 그는 침대로 가서 길게 엎드려 낡은 책의 누런 책장을 넘겨 보기 시작했다.

He read for about an hour, vaguely aware of the hallway sounds quieting down, doors slamming shut, and lights being turned off.
그렇게 한 시간이 흘렀다. 책을 다 읽고 정신을 차렸을 땐 문밖으로 복도에서 왁자지껄 분주하던 학생들의 소음이 차츰 가라앉고 있었다. 갑자기 문이 왈칵 열리며 불이 하나둘씩 꺼졌다.

There goes Dr. Hager; he’s still up, Neil thought, hearing the resident dorm marshal shuffling up and down the hallway, making sure all was quiet.
‘헤이거 박사가 왔나보군. 아직도 안 주무시다니!‘
닐이 그런 생각을 하는 사이 복도에서는 헤이거 박사가 이리저리 방문을 확인하며 모두 잠자리에 들었는지 확인하고 다니는 소리가 들렸다.

He seemed to stop right in front of Nels closed door.
이번에는 닐의 방 바로 앞에 멈춰 선 듯했다.

"Quiet," Dr. Hager said aloud, shaking his head.
"Too quiet."
조용하군.
헤이거 박사는 머리를 흔들며 크게 혼잣말을 중얼거렸다.
너우 조용한데.

Several hours later, certain that everyone was
deep in sleep, the boys met at the gnarled old
maple tree.
몇 시간 뒤, 기숙사 모든 방의 불이 꺼지고 깊이 잠이 들 무렵, 학생들은 단풍나무 옆에서 만났다.

They had bundled themselves in winter hats, coats, and gloves, and a few of them had
brought flashlights to guide the way.
그들은 모두 모자와 두꺼운 코트 차림에 장갑까지 끼고 완전무장을 하고 있었다. 그중 몇 명은 손전등을 들고 밤길을 비췄다.

"Gggrrr!" The sound of the school hunting-dog startled them as he sniffed his way out of the bushes.
으르릉!" 학교 사냥개 소리가 그들이 덤불에서 빠져나가는 길을 킁킁거리면서 그들을 놀라게 했다.

"Nice doggie," Pitts said, stuffing some cookies his mouth and leaving a pile of them on the ground  "Let's move it," he hissed as the dog homed in on the food.
착하지. 사냥개의 입에 과자를 물려 주더니 이어서 과자 봉지를 통째로 바닥에 내려놓았다. 자, 어서 가자! 개가 모처럼 발견한 먹이에 정신이 팔려 있는 사이 피츠가 낮게 속삭였다.

"Good thinking, Pittsie," Neil said as the boys
crossed the campus under the light of a sky glowing with stars.
준비성 대단한데 피츠! 닐이 말했다. 일행은 잔디밭을 가로질러 갔다. 하늘에서는 별이 반짝이며 이들의 움직임을 지켜 주고 있었다.

"It's cold," Todd complained as they escaped the open, windblown campus and moved through an eerie pine forest, looking for the cave.
어이 추워. 일행은 탁 트인 교정을 빠져나와 분위기가 으스스해 보이는 소나무 숲을 통과했다. 문제의 동굴을 찾는 길은 생각보다 험난했다.

Charlie ran ahead as the others trudged slowly in the cold.
찰리가 제일 앞에서 걸으며 찬 바람 속에서 천천히 따라오는 일행을 선도했다.

"We're almost there," Knox said as they reached the bank of the stream and began searching for the cave that was supposed to exist somewhere among the tree roots and brush.
우리는 거의 다 왔어," 녹스는 그들이 개울둑에 도착하여 나무 뿌리와 덤불 사이 어딘가에 존재할 것으로 추정되는 동굴을 찾기 시작하면서 말했다.

"Yaa! I'm a dead poet!" Charlie shouted, sud-
denly popping out of nowhere.
와! 내가 죽은 시인이다.
찰리가 갑자기 튀어나오더니 소리를 질렀다.

He had found the cave.
그는 동굴을 찾았다.

"Ahh!" Meeks shrieked.
믹스가 비명을 질렀다.

"Eat it, Dalton," Meeks said to Charlie, recovering his composure.
믹스는 침착을 회복하며 찰리에게 말했다.

"This is it, boys," Charlie smiled. "We're home!"
바로 여기야 얘들아, 드디어 우리의 성을 찾은 거야.

The boys crowded into the dark cave and spent several minutes gathering sticks and wood, trying to light a fire.
소년들은 어두운 동굴로 몰려들었고 몇 분 동안 막대기와 나무를 모아 불을 피우려고 했다.

The fire came to life and warmed the barren interior.
쌓인 땔감 위로 발갛게 불꽃이 타오르며 동굴 속 사방 벽으로 일행의 그림자를 드리웠다.


The boys stood silently, as if in a holy sanctuary.
일행은 마치 성스러운 의식을 치르는 듯 숙연하게 모닥불 주위에 둘러앉았다.

"I hereby reconvene the Welton Chapter of the Dead Poets Society," Neil said solemnly.
나는 이로써 죽은 시인 협회의 웰튼 지부를 다시 소집한다"고 닐은 엄숙하게 말했다.

"These meetings will be conducted by me and by the rest of the new initiates now present.
이 회의들은 저와 현재 참석한 나머지 새로운 입문자들에 의해 진행될 것입니다.

Todd Anderson, because he prefers not to read, will keep minutes of the meetings."
단 토드 앤더슨은 시 낭송을 좋아하지 않기 때문에 이 모임의 서기로 활동할 것이다.

Todd winced as Neil spoke, unhappy but unable to speak up for himself.

"I will now read the traditional opening message from society member Henry David Thoreau."

Neil opened the book that Keating had left him and read:
닐은 그 말과 함께 키팅에게서 빌린 책을 펼쳐 낭송을 시작했다.

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately'" He skipped through the text.
내가 숲 속에 틀어박힌 것은 오랜 숙고 끝에 자유로운 생활을 원했기 때문이다. 그는 중간 부분을 생략하고 끝부분으로 넘어갔다.

"I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life!'"
삶의 정수를 깊이, 그리고 끝까지 음미하며 살고 싶다.

"I'll second that!" Charlie interrupted.
나도 동감이야. 찰리가 끼어들었다.

"To put to rout all that was not life,'" Neil con-tinued, skipping again.
삶이 아닌 것은 모두 털어버리기 위해서.
닐은 또 다시 몇 구절을 건너뛰어 낭송을 계속했다.

"*And not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.'"
목숨이 다 하는 그 순간까지, 삶이 끝났다고 포기하지 말자.

There was a long silence.
긴 침묵의 시간이 흘렀다.

"Pledge Overstreet," Neil said.
이번엔 네가 선언의 시를 낭독해.

Knox rose. Neil handed him the book.
낙스가 일어섰다. 닐은 그에게 책을 넘겨 주었다.

Knox found another page and read:
낙스는 책장을 펼쳐 그곳에 쓰인 구절을 읽었다.

"If one advanses confidently in the direction of his dreams, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.‘  Yes!"
확신을 갖고, 꿈을 향해 매진한다면. 뜻하지 않은 곳에서 성공을 거두게 될 것이다.‘

Knox said, his eyes blazing.
낙스가 눈을 빛내며 말했다.

" I want success with Chris! “
난 크리스와 함께 성공을 맛볼거야.

Charlie took the book from Knox.
찰리가 낙스에게서 책을 뺏으며 얼굴을 찌푸렸다.

"Come on, man," he said, making a face at Knox, "this is serious.”

" Charlie cleared his throat.

"There's the wonderful love of a beautiful
maid,
아름다운 처녀의 황홀한 사랑이 있는가하면

And the love of a staunch, true man,
진실한 남자의 확고한 사랑도 있다.

And the love of a baby that's unafraid.
그리고 두려움을 배우지 못한 넞먹이의 사랑도 있다.

All have existed since time began.
그 어느 사랑이든 태고적부터 이어져 내려온 것.

그러나 최고의 사랑

"Author anonymous," Charlie laughed as he handed the book to Pitts.
작자불명이래. 찰리는 피츠에게 책을 넘겨주며 웃었다.

“‘Here lies my wife: here let her lie. Now she's
at rest.., And so am I!'" Pitts giggled. "John Dryden, 1631-1700.
나의 처는 여기에 잠들다. 여기 나의 처를 묻으리. 평안히 쉬시길…그리고 이 몸도! ‘“ 피츠가 쿡쿡 터져 나오는 웃음을 참으며 계속해서 지은이 이름을 읽었다.존 드라이든, 1631에서 1700년.

I never thought those guys had a sense of humor!" he said.
그런데 이 사람들은 농담 같은 건 모르나보지. 왜 이리 심각해!”

Pitts handed the book to Todd while the boys laughed at his joke.
다른 학생들이 피츠의 우스갯소리에 배꼽을 쥐고 웃는 동안 피츠가 책을 토드에게 넘겨 주었다.

Todd froze, holding the book, and Neil quickly took it before the others noticed.
토드는 책을 받자 얼어버렸고 다른 학생들이 그 모습을 눈치채기 전에 닐이 얼른 책을 낚아챘다.

Charlie grabbed the book from Neil and read:
찰리가 닐에게서 책을 넘겨 받고 읽기 시작했다.

"Teach me to love? Go teach thyself more wit:
나에게 사랑을 가르쳐 주기 전에 그대가 먼저 지혜를 얻으라.

I chief professor am of it.
나는 사랑의 도사라네.

The god of love, If such a thing there be,
May learn to love from me."
사랑의 신. 만일 그런 자가 존재한다면
분명 내개로 와
가르침을 청할지어다.

The boys "oohhed and aahhed" at Charlie's alleged prowess.
마치 닐의 시인 양 일행은 땅을 쳐대며 웃었다.

"Come on guys, we gotta be serious," Neil said.
그만해 얘들아. 좀 진지해질수 없니?

Cameron took the book. "This is serious,'
and began to read:
카메론이 책을 들고서 읽기 시작했다.
내가 진지한 시를 읽어 주지.

우리는 음악의 창조자

And we are the dreamers of dreams,
그리고 꿈을 갈망하는 몽상가들

부서지는 물결 따라 홀로 거닐다

several boys uttered.

"Sshh!" hissed the others. Cameron continued;

The boys sat quietly. Meeks took the book leafed through the pages.
일행은 조용히 입을 다물고 앉아 있었고 믹스가 책을 들고 마땅한 시를 찾기 위해 책장을 이리저리 뒤적였다.

"Hey, this is great," said, and started reading seriously:
이 시 괜찮네.

"Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole
I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul!"
극에서 극을 뒤덮는 이 지옥 같은 어두움,
내 몸을 감싸 이 어둠 밖으로
모든 신들을 향해 감사를 올린다.
(나를 덮는 밤, 기둥에서 기둥까지 구덩이처럼 검다 나는 나의 정복할 수 없는 영혼을 위해 어떤 신이든 감사한다!")

"That was W. E. Henley, 1849-1903."

*Come on, Meeks," Pitts scoffed.
피츠가 비웃었다.

"You?"
"What?" Meeks said, his look all surprise and innocence.
믹스는 눈을 동그랗게 뜨고 순진한 표정으로 피츠를 보았다.
