Ever since I was little,
어렸을때부터

freaked me out a bit
(나를 조금 놀라게 했어.) 그 얘기만 들으면 눈앞이 캄캄해진다.

anything to do with my ears bothers me a lot.
귀와 관련된건 뭐든 짜증이 났다.

It was drowning out
people’s voices,
like I was underwater.
그 소리는 마치 물속에 있는 것처럼 사람들의 목소리를 삼켜 버렸다.

But then in my annual checkup in October
I flunked the audiology test
and the doctor was like,
그러다가 10월에 받은 연간 검진에서 청력 테스트에 떨어졌고, 의사선생님은 이렇게 말했다.

And he sent me to a special ear doctor who took impression of my ears.
그러더니 나를 내 귀의 틀을 떴던 귀 전문의에게 보냈다.

Out of all my features,
my ears are the ones I hate the most.
(기능)얼굴 중에서도 귀는 내가 제일 싫어하는 부분이다.

They’re like tiny closed fists
on the sides of my face.
마치 얼굴 양쪽에
조그맣게 꽉 쥔 주먹 두 개가 붙어 있는 것처럼 생겼다.

They look like
squashed pieces of pizza dough
sticking out of the top of
my neck or something.
내 귀는 목 꼭대기에 삐죽 튀어나온,
짓이겨진 피자 반죽처럼 생겼다.

normal hearing aids usually have a part that wraps around the outer ear to hold the inner bud in place.
보통 보청기들은 내부의 소형 이어폰이 귓속에서 움직이지 않도록 지탱하기 위해 바깥귀에 걸치는 귀걸이 부분이 있다.

But in my case, since I don’t have outer ears, they had to put the earbuds on this heavy-duty headband that was supposed to wrap around the back of my head.
그러나 내 경우에는, 바깥귀 자체가 없기에 뒷머리를 감싸게 될 튼튼한 머리띠 위에 이어폰을 붙여야 한다.

This curved piece of plastic over here connects to the tubing on the ear mold.
여기 있는 구부러진 플라스틱 조각은 귀 틀에 관을 연결시켜 주는 거야.

Taht’s why we took those impressions back in December, so that this part that goes inside your ear fits nice and snug.

Totally uncomfortable.

All I was were these tubes jutting out from either side of my head- like antennas.
보이는 거라고는 귀 양쪽으로 삐죽삐죽 튀어나온 관들뿐이었다.. 마치 안테나처럼.

They don’t make any difference.
그래봤자 차이도 없을 거야.
